Community Health Resources (CHR), nonprofit behavioral healthcare provider, recently launched an innovative and proven training program focused on suicide prevention. In one interactive class, Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR) can help people from all walks of life learn how to recognize the warning signs of suicide, offer hope, and refer people to appropriate resources for help.

“CHR has implemented ‘Zero Suicide’ policies, philosophies, and practices throughout the agency and is eager to provide this important training to anyone in the community who wants to learn how to help save lives,” said Heather Gates, President and CEO of CHR. “QPR is open to anyone who wants to make a difference; there are no prerequisites for this training,” she noted.

Classes are available in person or online and are led by specially trained professionals from CHR with years of relevant experience. The QPR class takes between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on class participation, and the cost is $27 or lower, based on the number of participants in the course.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death for individuals aged 10-14 and 20-34, and recent data released from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) shows that central and eastern CT have the highest rates of suicidal ideation in the state,” Gates said. “I strongly encourage people to sign up for this brief and highly effective training.”

QPR started in Spokane, WA in 1999 as part of a grassroots effort to provide accessible suicide prevention training for the entire community and is now a highly recognized and researched model led by the QPR Institute.

About CHR: With a broad range of services for children, families, and adults whose lives have been touched by mental illness, addiction, trauma, and homelessness, CHR is the state’s most comprehensive nonprofit behavioral healthcare provider. In addition, CHR was the first nonprofit in CT to meet all the rigorous federal criteria as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic and has repeatedly been named among the Top Workplaces in the state.
